Selecting Reward Credit Cards

The estimated dollar spending required to earn a specific amount of rebate is calculated by looking at each card's offer terms, and then make assumptions based on the spending. Below are the assumptions made:

• Gas: We assumed that $125 is charged to a card monthly. Furthermore, this represents 15% of overall charges on the credit card.
• Supermarket: 15% of overall charges on the credit card.
• Dining/restaurant: 20% of overall charges on the credit card.
• Travel: 10% of overall charges on the credit card.
• Total monthly credit card charges: $833.33.

Clearly these are simplying assumptions. Everyone will have different spending patterns, so each person's actual amount will vary. This does not, however, take away the validity of this study, as the goal is to evaluate the relative reward power of all the reward credit cards.
